Summiting Black Elk Peak

"Up there?!" I exclaimed incredulously. "If we took this trail on the way up, I don't think I would have believed we were going all the way up there! It's so far!"

The day after Michael and Leslie arrived we hiked Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak). At 7, 242 ft it's the highest peak west of the Pyrenees Mountains and east of the Rocky Mountains. To make the walk a loop we ascended via Little Devils Tower Trail, which winded through stunning scenery and past Cathedral Spires, without a glimpse of the peak until we were almost there. On the descent down Harney Peak Trail we looked back to see the little tower at the peak way, way above us.
