Happy Thanksgiving!

A few people had asked Aaron and I if we were doing anything to celebrate thanksgiving, but seeing as though it's not a holiday in Australia we didn't really have anything planned ..... until the day before thanksgiving we were pleasantly surprised to be coincidentally treated to a roast dinner by some Ozzie friends!



About five months ago we joined a Christian (Pentecostal) church, C3 (http://www2.myc3church.net/) where we've met loads of very friendly and welcoming people. At our first church service Luke enthusiastically invited us to join a connect group (bible study) he runs with Jane and Sam. Unfortunately he wasn't going to be at the next meeting, but he gave us the details. A few weeks later we showed up at complete strangers apartment and were warmly welcomed in. We were the first to arrive and despite having never met them before Jane and Sam made us feel right at home.

Recently our group ran a seven week alpha course (http://www.alpha.org.au/ - if you see the advert then please note that the course didn't actually involve running around a desert island or getting covered in mud! Although the course was more sedate, it was still a lot of fun!) Every week we started the night with a meal, before watching a DVD followed by a discussion. The DVD began with street interviews in Covent Garden, London (which felt rather familiar to me), before the Pastor gave a speech. The topics looked at different aspects of Christian faith ranging from 'who is Jesus' to how to share your faith with others. We enjoyed learning more, spending time with new friends and also Sam and Jane's delicious cooking! On the grand finale of the course Sam and Jane prepared a roast (with scrumptious veggies!) which happened to be the day before thanksgiving.

Aaron just found the church by searching on the internet. Yes it is close, within walking distance, which is nice.

Roundwood Building Workshop

I went to a Roundwood Building Workshop this weekend. Roundwood is timber that is left as logs rather than being cut into planks. We constructed a shelter for a cob pizza oven (yet to be constructed). The timer is a mix of red cedar and ash juniper. Before doing anything with it we had to take the bark off it to prevent insect infestation down the road. The night before the project leaders charred the end of the posts that would be put in the ground. The charring is another insect infestation prevention measure. Getting the cut ends charred is of particular importance. The post holes were dug to a depth of 2-3'. We also half buried a couple of dozen roofing nails in the charred end of each post for additional stabilization. The cool thing about roundwood is that you can use features of the tree(like this limb) to add beauty and support. This limb will provide support for a girder. Apartment Homesteading: Growing Sprouts in a Milk/Juice Carton

Materials: Empty Carton, Funnel, Scissors, dry beans No shed updates this week. Jean's parents will be visiting us soon. They'll be here for a few weeks so I wanted to leave enough for them to do to keep them out of trouble while Jean and I are at work. Instead of a shed update, here's the first article of I what I hope will be a fairly regular series I'm calling apartment homesteading. Subjects may include horticulture, food preservation, alcohol fermentation, animal husbandry, materials re-purposing, function stacking and whatever else we can come up with. All these activities will be extremely small scale, typically low overhead and low maintenance. A sprout is a germinated seed that has grown for 3-10 days.
