Sedona with Vicky

Jean's cousin, Vicky, is based in Sydney but her company has an office in Phoenix, Arizona. A few years ago Vicky made a work trip to Phoenix. At the end of her work trip she flew into Austin and hung out with us for a weekend before going back to Australia. Vicky had another work trip this Spring so we decided to meet her in Sedona which is fairly close to Phoenix.

Before meeting Vicky in Sedona we stopped by the Walnut Canyon National Park for some more natural building research. These dwellings, built into the rocky overhangs have been vacant for about 800 years.

The rocky outcrops provided ceilings and floors. Walls were constructed of uncut rock with mud mortar and then plastered over with more mud. The plaster is all gone but some of the original mortar still remains.


I wonder if this provides some explanation as to why all the Mormons I've ever known have always been so chipper.

The next day we went on a hike with 14 river crossings.


Whew! That's a lot of river crossings.

I think we've figured out that unmaintained is park ranger code speak for more fun/interesting

After recrossing all 14 river crossings we went back into Sedona.


Between Daring Dan at the Grand Canyon and and Dehydration Dan in Sedona, I'd say Arizona has some pretty poor role models.

T-Brick Shed: Rubble Trench French Drain Installation

The last thing Jean told me before she left for the UK was that I had better finish the shed project before she gets back or else. The trench was a little soggy still but I decided to press on with the french drain installation for fear what that else may be (Although, I'm hoping the "else" will be make me a delicious sandwich). I dug out the high section blocking  the drain outlet and and cleaned up a some edges before putting down landscape fabric and a layer of gravel. Putting down the landscape fabric in the trench. Landscape fabric is water permeable but significantly less sediment permeable. This will help prevent the gravel and french drain from becoming blocked up with silt. Here's my work crew. T-Brick Shed: Preliminary Roof Design

Here's a design I came up with this weekend for a monoslope roof. Granted, it's not terribly original nor natural it should do the job and be relatively easy to construct. Sheathed with plywood and metal panels. Here's the framing detail for the roof. We'll infill the side jack walls with cob and wine bottles(something like the picture below)
